#25for25: Freedom to Dream
- Nov 25, 2023
Mother and daughter, Mai and Minh, moved to Singapore from Vietnam in 2014 to live with Mai’s husband. However, as non-Singaporeans, moving here came with a lot of challenges including financial difficulties.
Being a foreign student meant that Minh’s school fees were more expensive. Mai also had to regularly visit the doctor due to an autoimmune disease that she was diagnosed with in 2017.
As she is only a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) holder, she is unable to use her husband’s MediSave to offset the monthly fees. Her illness has caused her to be hospitalised on some occasions too, racking up over $10,000 in medical bills.
Mai’s worsening health condition, coupled with her husband’s old age, has also stopped them from taking up more shifts at work to earn more money. Hence, despite their already frugal lifestyle, the family had to find other means to reduce spending even more.
Our Assistance and Well-being Team helps to alleviate the family’s burdens through education sponsorship for Minh’s secondary education, and by being a listening ear in tough times.
With the additional support from ACMI, the pair now see the future with a greater sense of hope and freedom.
Mai has been less stressed out about finances and happier at work. On top of focusing on her studies, Minh has also been able to discover new interests like basketball, and dream of her future career, which is to start her own F&B business with her friends.
Help us continue supporting low-income transnational families and non-Singaporean children, as well as other vulnerable migrants we serve!
